Isopsephy in the Greco-Roman World
Use in magical papyri, oracles, satirical and religious inscriptions
INTRODUCTION
Isopsephy in antiquity was not merely a literary game — it was used in magical papyri, oracles, erotic, satirical and religious inscriptions. Ast & Lougovaya distinguish two independent encryption methods.
IN DEPTH
Method 1 — Letter-by-letter encryption:
Each letter is replaced by (next power of 10) − (letter value). E.g. Α(=1) → 9 (because 10−1=9), Β(=2) → 8, Ι(=10) → 90. Identified by the presence of archaic signs (Ϛ, Ϙ, Ϡ) in the cryptotext. Used mainly in Greco-Roman Egypt.
Method 2 — Isopsephic equation (classic isopsephy):
Two words or phrases with the same sum are considered semantically connected. This is the pan-Hellenic method, from the 1st cent. to late antiquity.
Known examples:
ΑΒΡΑΣΑΞ = 365 = days of the year (magical papyri PGM). ΝΕΡΩΝ = 1005 = "he killed his mother" (Suetonius). ΑΜΗΝ = 99 (Christian inscriptions). ΙΣΙΣ = 420 = "great hope" (P.Oxy.). ΣΑΡΑΠΙΣ = 662 = "Alexandria adorns" (P.Oxy.).
Isopsephy evolved from literary device (archaic/classical period) → magical tool (Hellenistic) → religious interpretation (Christian).
