Planets, zodiac and elements per the papyri

WHAT IT IS

Each letter corresponds to a planet, zodiac sign, or element (earth, water, air, fire, ether). There are two systems: PGM (from the Greek Magical Papyri) and the Barry system.

HISTORY & SOURCES

The idea that the 7 vowels correspond to the 7 planets is based on the Pythagorean harmony of the spheres. Nicomachus of Gerasa (~60–120 AD) in his Manual of Harmonics is the oldest surviving source that explicitly corresponds the 7 vowels (Α Ε Η Ι Ο Υ Ω) to the 7 planetary sounds.

The Papyri Graecae Magicae (2nd cent. BC–5th cent. CE) extend the system: 7 vowels → planets, 5 compound consonants (Θ Ξ Φ Χ Ψ) → 5 elements, 12 remaining consonants → 12 zodiac signs. Thus the entire alphabet (24 letters) corresponds to the cosmos. The vocal chanting of vowels was used in magical invocations to "activate" planetary forces. Barry (1999) presents a variant based on the initials of Greek element names.

CORRESPONDENCES (PGM)

Α🌙 Moon
Ε☿ Mercury
Η♀ Venus
Ι☉ Sun
Ο♂ Mars
Υ♃ Jupiter
Ω♄ Saturn

Β,Γ...Τ12 Zodiac Signs

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Word: ΛΟΓΟΣ
  2. Λ → ♍ Virgo (zodiac)
  3. Ο → ♂ Mars (planet)
  4. Γ → ♉ Taurus (zodiac)
  5. Ο → ♂ Mars (planet)
  6. Σ → ♒ Aquarius (zodiac)

CONCLUSION

The astrological analysis shows which cosmic forces "compose" the word. Words with a dominant Sun planet were considered "solar" etc.
